After I watch the film Eight Below, besides the lovely dogs, I like South Polen too. It lies at the heart of a huge continent of frozen desert. In film the scientist find the stone and he was injured. The first expedition to come near reaching the South Pole was led by an Irish explorer Shackleton. He had gone as a junior officer with Captain Scott on an earlier exploration of the Antarctic, and then in 1908 he himself reached within 120 kilometres of the Pole.
Three years later, Captain Scott, a naval officer, set out from New Zealand with a party of 60 men, and motor sledges, Siberian ponies, and sledgedogs. He decied to follow Shackleton’s route from the Ross Sea. At the same time Amundsen started by another route, telling Scott he would race him to the South Pole.
